We’re Not From Texas

I am incapable of sleeping in. I can remember traveling sometimes, and waking up and having to lay in bed for hours, with nothing to do. I feel so useless and wasteful.  I would poke the person I was with until I drug them out of bed to get them moving. Morning, to me, is the best time of the day. Anywhere in the whole world. As I’ve gotten older, I no longer lay in bed. I make sure my Starbucks card is loaded (because, let’s face it, Starbucks is everywhere!), I throw on my camera bag and hat, and when the sun is up, I am on my way. That way my co-travelers can sleep in peace and I am happy too.

I went back down to the Riverwalk. It was completely deserted. FANSTASTIC!!! And there were security officers everywhere, so I really didn’t worry too much about my safety.

It’s green and beautiful and it winds and twists and turns. I could spend every morning there. (Except my coffee shop didn’t open until 7:00….I’m not used to having to wait until that late to have a cup of coffee.) Cafe’ Rio was as beautiful with its umbrellas as I had imagined. There were ducks and birds and all kinds of critters. The bridges were elegant and full of history. The Church bells were my music instead of the ipod.

I went back to St. Paul’s Square get all my boys and get them moving. We headed back out to get some more sight seeing done. I had a feel for the area so it wasn’t as confusing to find things (not that anything in the downtown area is that hard to find.) We found all kinds of things to do for the day. Lots of fountains to run through. Towers to climb. Wars to research. History lessons to learn. Good food to eat. Cards to buy.

The red tower was given to San Antonio by Mexico several years ago as a gift of friendship.

I’m going to be totally honest… I did not know the history of the Alamo before I went there. I ended up reading it on the Iphone while sitting on a bench on the outside. (I’m not a huge history buff for sure.) But here’s what I learned….the Texans fought Mexico and were outnumbered 200 to 1500 while at the Alamo.  Davey Crocket was killed there. AS was Jim Bowie. It’s much smaller than I had imagined. I thought it would be a much taller for some reason.

Another stop on our route was the Tower of the Americas. It’s a building that overlooks the whole city. Much like the space needed. It was pretty awesome.  It has a revolving restaraunt in it.

Our last stop for the morning was the Mexican Market. Given my background in shopping, I am suprised that I didn’t buy much there. It’s full of beautiful painted pottery, and trickets that kids can’t live without. And food. And beautiful beautiful music. And bulls. Mechanical ones. Surrounded by people that cheer for a little Wyoming Cowboys that knows how to ride one of those things!

Song: That’s Right, You’re Not From Texas

I had a friend in Colorado Springs that used to be soooo proud of his Texas State, I never understood why, until now. Texans are proud of their state. He used to play this song all the time.  He even made a playlist for me with it smack in the middle.
