For spring break we headed west. Navigating away from bikini clad, college filled beaches, we found our way to San Francisco. On the particular day we traveled, Colorado had a storm, which we had to drive through the day after. We ended up being caught in a very large 8 hour traffic jam due to hundreds of accidents. Luckily, our flight was delayed and we are able to catch the original flight, and we ended up making there shortly after dusk.
We stayed a block away from Union square and I was able to walk to my choice of 3 Starbucks every morning.
And that’s how I started my first day in the City by the Bay.
We grabbed a bus pass, good for cable cars, trollies and buses for three days. We jumped on a bus that a homeless man told us to get on, and headed to Golden Gate park. A park that is bigger than Central Park in NY. (A fact I was unaware of). We hopped off the bus at the very beginning of the park, picked up a couple of donuts at a quaint little shop and then into one of the most beautiful, expansive parks I have ever seen. It has several lakes, two museums, the Japanese tea garden, the botanical garden, bocce courts, polo courts, Dutch wind mills, and the list goes on and on.
Our first stop was at the cement slides. You have to ride on a box top to get down. And then we were off to the Academy of Sciences, as soon as the dino dude heard the word science….he wasn’t about to let us pass it up. It was incredible actually, and I’m glad we went. We then keep walking/ sight seeing through the rest of the park, there was just soooo much to see, I know we only saw about 1/3 of it. some of the grassy areas reminded me of Georges Seurat’s painting.
I had a little boy helping me with pictures, but I won’t tell you which ones are his. 🙂
When the park ended…. the beach began. It was beautiful and sunny and perfect. I had been expecting it to be rainy and terrible, so it was a pleasant surprise to have sunshine. We walked along the entirety of the beach, until the Cliff House, a restaurant that was once a bath house surrounded by pools. It was an amazing place to eat, just for the view alone. We found sand dollars, watched little dogs and big dogs play in the waves. Watched the sailors go by, along with surfers and liners.
And then once again, we hopped on the 28 bus to the next destination for the day…..
I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did. I thought I would see, grab a couple pictures and say to myself. “Well, got that done!”I wasn’t expecting to be in awe of it.
But I was.
And so were my boys.
It was beautiful. And I couldn’t stop shooting it. (I took 100 more pictures than are here.)
It has such a history.
We walked to the middle and back and then down to Crissy field to see it at a distance. Right off the dock. (My boys were really over me at this time during the day!)
And so again, dusk was upon us. We had bee walking for the better part of 11 hours. So we hopped on a bus and headed to bed. And slept and slept and slept…until it was time to get up and walk up and down the hills to the nearest Starbucks and start a whole other adventure for the day.
