Favorite Things: Decorating the House

Ok, I’m going to let you in on a little secret.

I don’t really fight with my husband. Hardly ever. I mean really fight. Bicker yes. Fight no.

Unless it’s Christmas decorating day.

Normally held on day after Thanksgiving. Just one day after I spend my day being dreamy and thankful and nostalgic….

…..the flood gates open. There is normally yelling involved. Sometimes things are thrown all around. Chaos breaks out. The dogs start barking. The kid starts screaming. Tinsel is flying. Lights are flickering.  Things are said like “oh yeah, well you smell like reindeer poop…”  It’s awesome.  (and then we eat left over cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie and stuff ourselves silly all over again and all is well with the world)

I am pretty particular. My husband believes in free spirit decorating.  (Like actually throwing tinsel at the tree from a far distance.) I’m a free spirit. My dream in life is to drive around a VW van. How free spirited is that? But Christmas decorations MUST BE organized and beautiful. Lights need to be straight.

So over the last few years, I’ve really steered away from stuff. I have alot of greenery now.  And plants. (I got my poinsettas for $1 each on black friday… the one thing I bought that day. oh except I picked up a dishwasher while I was out) A lot of things from nature. Left over christmas tree branches.  Pieces of chopped wood. Wreaths from the PTO (since we run it, we feel compelled to buy EVERYTHING!)  A lot of things that I use for other seasons too and they just get rotated.  It eliminates a bit of the argument. And also, since I still have a hole in the roof and no new roof… there are no lights outside. Therefore, this year, for once….it was a bit peaceful at my house on Christmas decoration day. A bit.

Your house could be in a magazine. Beautiful!

  • Your fights made me giggle a little. My husband and I are the same way. He dreads when I start pulling out the Christmas decoration boxes! Beautiful photos!
