Thank God For the Sunshine

I’ve got to admit…the weather here on the plains has been mighty peculiar.  Palm Sunday is normally spent in winter parkas and snow boots. That’s just the way it is here.

But instead of the winer parkas….we were in t-shirts.

And we got the entirety of my house and both out buildings completely painted. (OK, one wall of the garage is unpainted, as we ran out of paint. But that will take about 1 hour to finish.)

I got my new red roof put on last month (yes, if you’re are counting that was 8 months of waiting for it.) It’s a metal roof. It brought so much color to the house. Except…. the siding of my house was painted green. Yup, we’ve been living in a Christmas house for a month now.  (some dumb dumb decided to paint aluminum siding, as the original color was grey.) So, for the first time in 10 years, my husband and I decided to paint a house. Ours. And we went with grey. The original color of the house.

I started with the chicken coup. I love it. Especially the door.  And… we met a mail man a while back that actually remembers chickens running around back there.

I won’t be getting chickens. As exciting as fresh eggs sounds… stepping in chicken poo doesn’t really float my boat.

I swore I wouldn’t show this picture until my house was completely finished. But this is what we fell in love with a couple years ago. I know… what the heck were we thinking?!! (The inside was really what we fell in love with, it’s completley beautiful.)   The deck on top was pulled off, as the wood was rotting and it will be replaced very shortly as part of the roof re-do. The eves and saufets have been vinylized so I won’t have any more birds nesting in them or coming into my house. The whole thing has been repainted. And the roof is red. The chain link will go as well. All in good time. It’s 100 years old. It needs TLC, and we are giving it plenty….just a little at a time.

This was taken in April 2010

April 2012…from a moving car.

We had to paint around a live electric line. (the power company decided not to return calls this week, so we went ahead…..very very carefully and painted around them. Given my prior experience with being electricuted…. I kind of left that part up to the hubby. We also had to come up with some crazy tactics to reach the very very top of our house. …..we duct taped a paint brush to a mop handle and stood at the top of a very very tall ladder to reach it.  Oh, and I climbed a ladder on top of the metal roof (the lower part) while my husband held the bottom to keep it from slipping down the slope of the house. I have to say… I was less scared to sky dive than I was to do that.

It worked.

Like I’ve always said… there is always an adventure to be found… even in your own back yard.  We made definate progress. Even if I do look homeless after it is all over.
