On one of the days off of school last week, my little dino dude and I decided to build a cardboard haunted house. Now, I don’t do scary . I don’t like scary. In fact the costume store these days is a little overwhelming for me. It scares the crap out of me actually. It’s full of zombie babies and creepy things that jump the hell out at you. I don’t think it’s amusing. In any way. I don’t like blood and gore. I don’t like the zombie craze. All the zombie walks going on all over kingdom come, not my scene. The last scary movie I saw was “The Ring” and that was well over ten years ago. And it scared me so bad that I had nightmares for a week. Ichabod Crane and his horseman are about as far as I go with scary.
I live in a 100 year old house (it’s birthday is this coming year) and I guess you can say I’m a believer in not messing with things that could cause bad juju. For instance, we have a marble stone underneath one of our trees. I hope it’s for a sweet old dog, but the house is 100 years old, so that might not be the case. Our contractor talked about having to dig it up and I pretty much told him to shove it. Leave it be peacefully. So fake scary things, movies, etc, are not exactly what I want in my head when I put it on my pillow in this old house.
Anyway, so I don’t decorate the house with spiders, and zombies, and crazy dead things. I like to keep it simple. I love halloween, the idea of candy getting and giving and dressing up. All that awesomeness. And because my house has very very dark wood trim all over, I try to keep the decorations light. White if I can. So we built a white haunted house. And the great thing about it, I don’t have to keep it. We can make a new one next year. Or not. Plus it just gave us time to be together and talk while we were gluing instead of being couch potatoes. Which we are sometimes on days off. There is no pattern. And it is not straight. But it’s ours. And I love it.
