It’s the beginning of the end of the year again. I have no idea how that happened. Not a clue in the least.
I went into a bit of a coma after Thanksgiving evening. I think I actually fell asleep sitting up. I’m not a black friday shopper. I go ahead and wait and spend the extra cash because I normally have no idea what I’m buying at least until the first week in December. I do go to one store. Every year. I don’t have to push through any crowds at Home Depot. (And if I take my husband, we normally come out with some sort of appliance!) I get my poinsettias for $1 a piece. Been doing that for years. I think I went overboard this year though. It kind of looks like I’m starting a poinsettia garden club here!!! I decorate the day after Thanksgiving. Christmas season is so short, and I want to enjoy it as long as I can. I also take it down directly after Christmas because I can’t stand Christmas trees on New Years. And I also have one other tradition on the day after Thanksgiving….pie and coffee for breakfast. (I went to the gym afterward, so I didn’t feel too bad about it!) It’s the best. The breakfast of champions.
The little Dino Dude decorates his own tree that night. I find dinosaur ornaments here and there, and I wanted to give him one, but I made him search for it. It was a pterodactyl. A beautiful green one. I’ll give him this tree when he leaves for college. By that time, it will be so overwhelmingly full. And I hope he keeps it forever.
The next day, we went to hunt for our Christmas tree. It was a beautiful day out. And I have to admit I thought it was going to be an easy process this year as it was last.
It was not.
It took forever. And about an hour into it, I just laid down in the snow and took a nap (thank goodness my hat had earphones in it!!!) Plus I’m pretty sure I broke my back hauling Christmas boxes through tiny spaces they don’t normally live it, so the snow on my back felt sooo good. Soon my kiddo joins me and eventually, the dogs lay down with us as well. Meanwhile my husband is still happily traipsing through the snow. Whistling.
And then we heard a yell. “I FOUND THE PERFECT ONE!!! Dino dude and I drag ourselves to where he is and see the trees he proclaimed to be perfect.
It’s one of the uglier trees. Not much too it. It’s apparently the right shape. But it’s what he likes, so I don’t argue and home with it we went, because at that point in time, it just doesn’t matter to me what we have. We make the kid drag it out of the forest himself. (Just kidding, trees aren’t that heavy!) I was just happy we were going to be on our way to eat some of the greatest green chili ever made at the Beartree Tavern.
So up it went, with all the memories, that almost always make me cry.
And the lights went up outside.
I would have to say, we were prepared to start the celebrating!
