Wax On, Wax Off

We’ve tried to do a few Valentines Day projects this year. I’ll have to admit, I’m a little sad that he’s not having a class party at school, so we didn’t get to make anything for his classmates. (No class parties at all this year) so, we’re making up for it a little bit at home. I’ve had roses on and off around the house for the last month. They make me happy. Especially when they are in my beautiful red vase. I tried to jazz up my  work area a bit too. (Just cut out hearts, cut a slit down the middle and fold back. Glue the two sides together and you will have 3D hearts!)

We also did a crayon batik last weekend. *this project is for a little bit older kids as you have to work with really really hot wax!* It was honestly one of my favorite things we have done. Basically we melted crayons in an old muffin tin and then kept them melted by putting them on a skillet. And then we painted our design on an old cotton t-shirt with tin foil underneath so it didn’t leak through. We used paint brushes that we could just throw away. When we were done and it was dry he balled it up to make crinkles in it.  Then we took spray fabric dye and sprayed it until it was completely covered. We let it dry overnight and then the next morning, I ironed the crayon off by pressing it between two sets of newspapers. You have to keep changing the newspapers after it’s full of crayon wax so it doesn’t get on your iron. If you want to add a blank piece of paper right at the beginning you can make a print of what you did.
