Bird Nest and Coffee Filters

In honor of Earth Day and in honor of Easter (the two kind of coexist this year) we decided to make some all natural center pieces and flower arrangements. We actually started working on them a couple of days ago and just finished them up today.

The first, I saw a picture of a while back, and of course it turns out that it was one of Martha Stewart’s photos. I had to at least try it.

Basically I made a giant homemade birds nest. It was kind of time consuming. But I loved how it came out.

I took and old garbage can (made of basket material) and took parts of it out, so there were lots of spaces for weaving. Then I went out to my yard, full of sprigs that I don’t want growing all over the place, clipped them (A LOT of them), and then I weaved them in and out of the spaces in the garbage can ( I wanted to use something that was lined and would hold water) until it was completely covered and very bird nest looking.

Then I filled it with flowers. I could have done something that didn’t last, but instead I filled it something that I planted and could possibily put outside when the weather actually decides to cooperate.

I think it turned out beautifully. Something original. Something earthy.

While I was working on my nest, the little bird was working on his project. He made a flower arrangement for a centerpiece for his table. I gave him free range of the water colors.  He painted a bunch of coffee filters, which ever way he wanted them. And then when they were dry, we twisted them into flowers. Then he went out and found sticks in the yard for the stems. Then we glued the flowers to the sticks. I filled a while pail full of bags and then tied the sticks together a bit. Then out of strap paper, made the grass/ leaves fr the flowers. I think it turned out marvelously!!!!! And it matched his water color painted egg perfectly as well!!!
